How VAT is calculated
If a price is quoted without tax, VAT is added to it. If the tax is already included in the price, the amount excluding VAT is worked out first.
Adding VAT: 100 euros excluding VAT
VAT = 100 × 24 / 100 = 24 euros.
Total including VAT: 124 euros.
Removing VAT: 124 euros including VAT
Excluding VAT = 124 / 1.24 = 100 euros.
VAT = 124 − 100 = 24 euros.
What matters for the calculation
How are amounts rounded?
The calculation is made for a single amount in euros, rounded to two decimal places. Half a cent is rounded up. When VAT is removed, the amount excluding tax is rounded first and VAT is the difference from the original amount. An invoice with several lines rounded line by line may give a different total.
When can 0% be selected?
The zero rate and VAT exemption are different tax regimes. The calculator performs the arithmetic at the selected rate but does not check whether that rate may be applied to a particular transaction. The rate also depends on when the supply takes place.
What is not covered by this calculation?
The calculator does not determine whether VAT registration is required, the place of supply, reverse charge, input VAT deduction or a refund amount. It does not complete the KMD return or convert foreign currency. The maximum starting amount is 999,999,999.99 euros.
Rates checked against guidance from the Estonian Tax and Customs Board on 2 October 2026.
